General Info

Tucked into the calm hot spring town of Toyako Onsen, Gyusuke Toyako delivers a dining experience that feels both local and deeply satisfying. Located at 144-50 Toyakoonsen, Toyako, Abuta District, Hokkaido 049-5721, Japan, this yakiniku restaurant has become a steady favorite for travelers and locals who want honest food in a relaxed setting.

The menu focuses on the bold, comforting flavors Hokkaido is known for. One of the standout dishes is 生ラムジンギスカン, featuring fresh lamb grilled right at your table. The meat is tender, clean-tasting, and pairs perfectly with the assortment of 野菜 that come ready to cook alongside it. If you prefer something with a deeper seasoning, 味付けジンギスカン offers a well-balanced marinade that enhances the lamb without overpowering it. Every grill session feels interactive and warm, especially when shared with friends or family.

Beyond the grill, Gyusuke Toyako surprises diners with its creative noodle options. ジンギスカンラーメン blends savory lamb flavors into a rich broth, creating something comforting after a long day exploring nearby locations. The ジンギスカン味噌ラーメン adds an extra layer of depth, with miso bringing out a heartier, slightly sweet finish that feels perfect for cooler evenings. These dishes show that the kitchen isn’t just focused on grilling but on delivering variety with consistency.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is casual and welcoming, making it easy to settle in whether you’re dining solo or with groups. Practical services like on-site parking, a clean toilet, and V-Money payment support add to the convenience. A cold beer alongside sizzling lamb rounds out the experience, especially after a soak in the nearby hot springs.

Reviews often highlight how approachable the staff are and how smoothly everything runs, even during busy hours. Gyusuke Toyako doesn’t try to be flashy. Instead, it leans into quality ingredients, a dependable menu, and a setting that feels genuine, which is exactly what makes the experience memorable.

What customers say?

“ Quaint looking shop, very kids-friendly and even has a kitchen play set and food play toys for our daughter to play. Ran by a nice friendly couple who knows a little English. Food portion was HUGE, more to the pricier side. The shoyu ramen was delicious, and the yakiniku was good too. The menu is only in Japanese so good to have Google lens to help you translate. ”

“ 10 out of 10 experience! Super friendly and accommodating lady. Most amazing meal I have had in entire Hokkaido. Great price with large portion of meat. Perfect seasoning and combination of the spice, veggies and meat. Highly recommended!!! ”

“ Eating here was an experience in itself! Though we waited almost 1 hour for our food, it was worth it. We ordered small portion of beef and pork shoulder and both were high quality and delicious. We were given grounded garlic to pair with our food which went really well with the meats. We also ordered the miso ramen which was fragrant and not overly salty. It was very obvious that the chefs (also the owners) take a lot of pride in what they do and a lot of effort is put into plating and preparation of food. You can be rest assured that you will be served good food. Even though it was only two of them cooking and serving the whole restaurant, they maintained a calm, friendly and patient demeanour, prioritising each customer’s satisfaction level. If you have a big group of you, it will be difficult to get a seat immediately if you are not one of the first few groups or if the restaurant is semi full already. The whole restaurant is a two men show and they take orders and serve tables one at a time. If you are not ready to wait, then I would suggest not to come. According to google maps, it is opened at 6pm. We arrived at 5:30pm and parked our car at the store front to wait as everything around the shop was closed already. By 5:50pm, the owners of the shop opened up the shop and there were three groups of diners including my husband and I. Still, we waited one hour for our food and we also saw many groups of customers leave after being told that waiting times would be long as there was just not enough seat and service capacity. Nevertheless, we are so glad we got to dine here during our stay at Lake Toya. ”

“ We visited the restaurant for lunch and ordered the beef sets for our family pack of 3. Great beef with a huge portion of vegetables and the dipping sauce was delicious too. Service was lovely and we felt welcomed, drop by if you’re in the area. (They also have lamb and pork sets) ”

“ A 5 star experience with great food at Lake Toya run by a friendly couple. Tip: you have to be there about 20 minutes before the opening time to get a table. Customers do come at the opening time but are typically turned away. They open and serve 3 tables, despite having more tables inside. Food takes a while to get served. The quality of the beef is excellent. The vegetable complement is also great. There is a good suction fan above so that you don’t smell after dinner. They only accept cash. I I highly recommend this place. Thumbs up! ”

“ You get a lot of food with the 500g set and the lamb and vegetables take a while to prepare and cook but it is very very delicious! The service was really friendly too. Best version of jinjisukan we ate in Hokkaido. I would come back to lake Toya just to eat here again. ”

“ We had our first yakiniku in this restaurant and it was really good! The owners were really nice and helpful. The food was really good and it was fun to try yakiniku ”

“ I ordered the jinguskan - there was a good selection of fresh vegetables and super nice lamb. If you skip the sauces, it’s gluten free as well (as a coeliac I can confirm the grill was spotlessly clean and since you cook it yourself, the risks of cross contamination for plain meat and veggies is about as low as you can get when dining out a anywhere). Was travelling by myself and it was no problem for them to seat a single diner (just make sure you have cash as they don’t take card). There appeared to be only two staff so it may take a little time if they are busy, but the service and atmosphere were excellent and I certainly left feeling happy with my meal. ”
